Actors love completely crazy characters to play. Completely crazy characters regularly win Oscars, and are relatively easy to play compared to more normal characters. All you have to do is act as strangely as you can. Johnny Depp would probably be a pretty good Joker, but there are a whole host of actors out there, including Gary Oldman, who would have done it even better. Still, Heath Ledger nailed it, and deserves his posthumous Oscar(as did the movie deserve about eight extra Oscars).

you gotta be kiddin’ me ,the joker an easy role to play ??? i can only think of one guy that could play this role as good as heath did & thats j.depp. i agree with u that heath did a great job, but it WAS unique my friend.
